When I was a kid, I remember getting Highlights in the mail every month. Highlights is a children' magazine that is
delivered to the home in the name of the child. Nowadays, I dread the mail and the inevitable bills that come with it, but back then getting mail was a thrill.
Highlights was an education tool that I didn't even realize at the time. I just thought it was a fun magazine that had lots of games including the infamous hidden pictures. It was filled with craft ideas and stories that were uplifting and taught valuable lessons.
I read Goofus and Gallant and every article for years. Now that I have my own children, I was thrilled to see that Highlights is still available because I remember how fun and important a tool it was for me as a child.
In a world filled with online games, Playstations and endless channels, its good to know there are still books and magazines available. Sure, in five years it could be a iPad version, but at least I know it will have the same good morals and activities that I grew up with.
There is a lot of pressure put on children these days. They are forced to adhere to strict educational standards and if they don't fit in the mold the state and federal government require then they are separated and exiled.
Highlights helps them feel special in a world that wants to make them a number in a sea of other numbers.
